The stomach flu It is a disease characterized by inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, that is, of the stomach lining, which is called gastritis, and of the intestines it is known as enteritis. When both organs are affected, gastroenteritis occurs, which is the irritation and inflammation of the entire digestive tract.

It occurs in most cases with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea (liquid stools), and cramps. It is a contagious disease, especially if it is viral. It is very common in childhood.

Loss of appetite, followed by diarrhea, are the first symptoms of this disease. Then there are bouts of vomiting, with watery diarrhea, pain in the gut, fever and extreme weakness. It usually disappears after two or three days.

It is caused by a viral infection, which is easily transmitted from one person to another through individual contact, without the mediation of food or drink. Microbially contaminated food and beverages can also cause gastroenteritis as well as allergic foods such as shellfish, eggs, or pork.

Another possible cause of this disease is the alteration of the bacterial flora natural digestive tract. Antibiotics can also have a similar effect, since they act on the intestinal bacterial population, altering its natural balance.

To treat gastroenteritis, one should follow 3 guidelines:

1- You should rest at home and drink large amounts of fluids, to avoid dehydration. The child must be well hydrated.

2- Except for antipyretics to lower fever, no other medicine should be given to the child. It is only used when prescribed by the doctor.

3- During the first 24 hours you should not eat food, and you should only drink water, carrot juice or tea; At least two liters of sugar-free liquid should be ingested daily, as this can prolong diarrhea. Apples, white rice and chicken breast are recommended foods for a treatment diet.

In nursing babies, nothing needs to be changed in their diet. The mother should continue to breastfeed him anyway. The same for babies who take a bottle. Avoid sugar and sweets, as well as fatty foods, and do not force the child to eat.

Gastroenteritis it is passed from child to child. For this reason, it is advisable to increase hygiene measures, with hand washing and cleaning in food. Apart from that, the child with gastroenteritis should not go to school, daycare or kindergarten. You should, yes, take the child to the doctor as soon as possible.
