Once the students have already adapted to the first year of primary school, it is time to continue growing and advancing through this stage in which the foundations of their academic and personal training are being laid. After a first contact and leaving their childhood stage far behind, children are assuming more and more changes and their maturation process grows by leaps and bounds. What do children who go from first to second grade learn?
This new second grade year is crucial in the development of children. With a literacy level that should already be quite good in general, they will begin a course that will demand more of them at all levels. First, because they are in a higher echelon in the primary stage and, second, because they are increasingly capable of taking on new challenges, greater responsibilities and their level of autonomy should be practically absolute.
Most of the routines that they have known after finishing the first year will continue to be valid in the next, understanding that adapting children to routine work allows them to gain autonomy when working, since they have internalized these routines as a natural part of their process Learning.
At the cognitive and content acquisition level, In the second year of primary school, a greater ability to understand short readings, a higher level of oral expression, with more orderly ideas and a broader language will be required (always taking into account the age of 6-7 years that is what they have right now ). Also in the use of mathematics the demand increases, expecting the students to solve small problems and to handle the numerical field with enough ease (units, tens, hundreds, ordering of numbers, etc.)
The alarms should not go off at home, since all this can be worked on and reinforced before starting the new course through games, the manipulation of elements to reinforce logic-mathematics, daily reading, etc. Although in second grade they work with materials (books and / or notebooks), it is important for teachers and families that play is used as a natural source (and motivator) of any learning.
At the attitudinal level, we enter a higher phase, with a better handling of emotions, a capacity for reflection and reasoning that allows them to develop their critical thinking, question what they do not consider fair, make value judgments, etc. In this sense, it is important to give them, both in the classroom and at home, opportunities to express themselves, both orally (debating, commenting on everyday situations ...) and in writing (making a personal diary) to encourage the habit of writing, expressing emotions and perceived sensations, enhancing creativity and imagination, which is still in full swing and which we must always take care of. Therefore it is very interesting to allow children to get bored, Adults do not seek entertainment for them, as we are thus preventing their ability to imagine and seek solutions to situations that arise as personal conflict from flowing.
In the new course that the kids face, there are three fundamental aspects to take into account and on which they will work throughout the year:
1. Team work
We move from the previous egocentric phase to understanding that we live in society and that we must adapt to what this entails. Knowing how to work in a team, collaborate and participate cooperatively in the classroom, but also with their friends, with their family, etc.
2. Personal autonomy
It is taken for granted that this aspect is more than achieved. Both families and schools must always bet on educating in such a way that children assume their actions, understand the consequences of the same and above all that they are capable of acting on their own, without the need to resort to adults (understanding this for everything that consider that they are capable of doing it autonomously).
3. Responsibility
Both with oneself and with the environment that surrounds them. It is vital that for this new stage children are aware that the responsibility they acquire as they grow up is greater. First, with their individual actions that affect themselves. Then, with his closest environment, classmates and family. Also, the assumption of new responsibilities that they have never had before allows them to understand more easily that they are growing and must adapt to new situations.
In other words, the new challenge in this second year of the primary stage is to be clear about the starting point of both work and attitude achieved in the first year and gradually increase the level of responsibilities and work habits that are they must be assuming. Always respecting individualities, but without losing the constancy that assures us of a good job.
