Nobody misses it since children have to learn English from a very young age, since it is at this age that it is easier for them and they understand it better since their mind is thus prepared for it. It is then that we begin to talk about learning English that different methods appear, each with its pros and cons: there is the one based on repetition, the one that uses a purely playful approach or the one that integrates English in the classroom as a language principal. And to all of them we must add the Montessori method to learn English in the most fun way.
The Montessori method is based on the teachings of the pedagogue María Montessori, it is specifically about preparing the environment and the necessary materials so that the child can learn by himself what most catches his attention. In this environment each element has its reason for being, be it an abacus, a story or a blank notebook and a few colored pencils.
Children are grouped by age periods Therefore, those who are a little older can help the little ones, being this advantageous for both of them and the role of the adult is merely a guide, in charge of guiding the children and answering all their questions.
The Montessori method is used to teach various subjects such as language or mathematics and, although it is not specially designed for learning languages, it can be adapted to apply it to English or any other language. So how is the Montessori method applied to learning English? Let's see it!
We are going step by step looking at all the possibilities that the Montessori method proposes to teach English to children.
1. Drawings in English at an early age
This method starts from the premise that boys and girls of all ages have a great capacity to absorb information. What can we do so that they become familiar with this language when they are still very young? Well, something as simple as putting the cartoons in their original version for a little while from time to time. It is an ideal way to accustom the ear and to gradually understand sounds and phonemes.
2. Classes in small groups
Another way to teach children English according to the Montessori method is to prepare small group classes. Children of similar ages are placed in groups of three or four and given games and materials in English. The teacher, as we have explained before, will act as a mere guide, when the child is struck by something, he will approach his tutor to find out what it is.
3. Material that activates the 5 senses
What is the specific material that should be placed within the reach of children? Well, the one that helps them awaken the five senses. Songs, flashcards, stories, large print puzzle pieces, and even mobile apps can be used for older students.
It should contain a theme that catches their attention and is related to the day to day so that they learn everyday concepts in English such as washing their hands, making the bed or setting the table. They can also be provided with toys and specific books in English so that they can gain certain knowledge.
4. The approach must be entertaining and also repetitive
Young boys and girls have a great capacity to learn things, including English, but since they still cannot read or write well, the instruction given to them in this language must be enjoyable and also repetitive so that they can learn concepts and sounds. As they grow, they can move to a more communicative approach in which they are shown grammar.
