How to teach a child to read? In the educational community there is a debate about doing it with the syllabic method - combinations of vowels and consonants - the phonetic method focuses on learning each sound of each letter. On this occasion, we want to show you some simple games for children to learn to read with syllabic methods, activities that parents can do from home or teachers in their classrooms.
Around five and six years of age, we initiate the youngest in one of their most important school learning, learning to read. Given its complexity and importance, it has been widely debated since its inception. And even today the debate continues, mainly around when and how to try this complex teaching.
Both parents and teachers always ask the same question: Should children start reading at the end of their infant stage (P-5) or wait until the beginning of their primary stage (1st)? Is it better to use a phonetic teaching method or a syllabic method?
Next, in this post we will focus on solving doubts and offering ideas about the methods. But for this, it is important to distinguish the phonetic method from the syllabic method first: While the phonetic method is based on learning each sound of each letter as a first step, the syllabic method focuses on learning combinations of vowels with consonants. For example, when reading the word "toad", a child with the phonetic method would read it by sounds like / s // a // p // o / while a child with a syllabic method would read it by syllables like / sa / / po /.
Both methods are widely used, with a variety of opinions and preferences from teachers, parents and children. Therefore, today we will try give you ideas and instructions of games to do from home and from school around one of the methods, the syllabic
Before being able to start the games that we will propose, a little preparation of essential material for your game will be necessary. This will consist of small white cards with large black letters that we can easily make by hand or with the help of the computer. And mainly we can group them into three possible levels:
- Direct syllables consonant - vowel (CV): In this first level we will make small cards combining 19 consonants with the 5 vowels of the alphabet, obtaining a total of 95 cards. Being the consonants b / c / d / f / g / h / j / l / m / n / ñ / p / r / s / t / v / x / y / z and the vowels a / e / i / o / u, and their possible combinations: pa, pe, pi, po, pu, sa, se, si, so, su, etc.
- Inverse vowel syllables - consonant (VC): In this second level we will make small cards combining 6 consonants with the 5 vowels of the alphabet, obtaining a total of 30 cards. Being the consonants l / m / n / r / s / z and the vowels a / e / i / o / u, and their possible combinations: al, el, il, ol, ul, az, ez, iz, oz, uz , etc.
- Locked syllables consonant - consonant - vowel (CCV): In this third level we will make small cards combining the groups / l / with 5 consonants bl / pl / fl / gl / cl and the consonant groups / r / with 7 consonants br / pr / fr / gr / cr / dr / tr, and all of them combined in turn with the 5 vowels of the alphabet, obtaining a total of 60 cards. Being their possible combinations: bla, ble, bli, blo, blu, dra, dre, dri, dro, etc.
Now the only thing left is, let's get to work! Being in class or at home, we can take advantage of play group or individual games with the cards previously described and detailed. These can be some examples for any of the previous levels:
- The game of looking for cardboard
The adult, either the teacher or the parent, will be able to indicate which card to look for (for example: / sa /) and the child or group of children will have to find it among a multitude of options. Being able to be on the table, on the floor or even on the patio.
- Speed races
With the help of a stopwatch and an adult, the child will be able to read a certain amount of cardboard avoiding making mistakes and going as fast as possible, either to self-improve or as part of a group competition.
- Word puzzle
Another calmer and more thoughtful game option could be to try pairing cards to form as many words as possible.
