How many times have we heard that phrase of ... 'you can't play with food!' However, some foods are an excellent resource to experiment and stimulate our senses: visual, auditory, sensory, gustatory and olfactory. That is why today I propose you Four Benefit-Filled Kids Games Using Dyed Rice (dyed rice) of colors.
Also, I will tell you step by step how color rice and dye it to carry out the most fun home games and educational activities with children. They can be carried out at home or in the classroom. Are you ready? Here we go!
Materials:
- Rice
- Food coloring
- Freezer bags
- Vegetable paper
- Strainer
- Trays
Legumes, fruits, vegetables or pasta are foods that they give us great educational value, with them you can learn mathematical or artistic knowledge. Have you tried to make paint prints with half an apple, make sensory trays with beans or make necklaces with macaroni?
There are countless activities to carry out with these foods and they can be applicable at any age, during their process there is a transformation, they can be modified and boys and girls will be participants in that change, they will observe how food can change its shape, color, that have many other different purposes and not only serve to feed us.
By following these simple five steps you can get your rice dyed at home; in the simplest way and without spending any money.
- With the help of a strainer and water we wash the rice very well until the water runs clear, in this way we eliminate the starch.
- Next we pour the amount we want of rice in each of the freezer bags.
- In each one of them we add drops of food coloring, one bag for each color. Keep in mind that the more drops we add, the more intensity of color we will obtain, it is always advisable to start with two drops and add as we see.
- We close the bags by hermetic closure and we remove all the interior well, in this way the food coloring will color the rice. This step will show us the color of the rice and it is time to add more coloring if we wish.
- We place the parchment paper on the trays and add the dyed rice, we let it dry in the open air as much as necessary, until the rice is completely dry and then… let's play!
Thanks to this resource, there are many activities that we can carry out with dyed rice, some examples are the following:
1. Sensory bottles
The game of sensory bottles for the little ones is great. You just have to put the rice in a bottle and that's it! We can do it with rice alone or introduce some object or other food (chickpeas, beans, lentils ...). In this way we will be enhancing their attention, observation and developing the senses of hearing and sight, since visually it is very attractive and striking for them.
2. Sensory trays
Ideal for any age, with which to play, experiment with new textures, and invent many stories, we can complement it with objects such as small animals, pompoms, etc. Themed sensory trays can be made, such as: spring tray, with green-tinted rice, some small insects, cucumber shavings and anything else we can think of.

3. Transfers
To work on fine motor skills, attention and concentration at an early age, the game of transfers is an ideal activity. It involves transferring the dyed rice from one container to another and can be done in many ways: with spoons of different sizes, funnels, jugs, kitchen utensils, etc.
4. Artistic achievements
Letting the creative and artistic imagination of each child fly, we can carry out this activity with the help of school glue, on cardboard or folios they will paste dyed rice and form their drawings and plastic representations.
The aforementioned activities along with many others more elaborated with dyed rice favor to the development of fine motor skills, attention, observation, concentration, they obtain mathematical concepts related to space and dimensions, as well as the difference between empty or full, for example.
They also contribute to the development of the senses, as in the case of bottles or sensory trays so attractive to them both visually and audibly, as well as being an excellent relaxant. With them your children or students will be able to enter a state of calm and tranquility, so they are great for those moments when they show anger or anger.
For all these reasons so beneficial for your little ones I encourage you to play at home with food, that experience, handle, smell, observe and learn with them aspects that will serve them in their day to day, and we, the adults, will accompany them in that process, playing and enjoying them.
